The Years After
Following its mysterious disappearance, the colonists of Roanoke Colony were not immediately disregarded. Many expeditions were planned to search for these missing persons, yet these explorations never made it back to Roanoke Island.
Sir Walter Raleigh
- Twelve years after White left Roanoke, Sir Walter Raleigh decided to find out what happened (intentions of setting it up as base for privateering)
- Weather turned bad on voyage and forced to return before he had made it to Roanoke Island
Spain
- Knew of Raleigh's plans to use Roanoke as base for privateering --> hoping to destroy it
- Had also been getting mostly inaccurate reports of activities there (imagined colony to be far more successful than it really was)
- Spanish authorities in the New World could not gain enough support from back home --> unable to conduct any investigations
